Cairo, January 12. iNTELtuiENCE is to hand from Khartoum that the military Governor has ordered 11,000 civilians to evacuate the town. The isolated position of the garrison is causing some anxiety, in consequence of the belief that an attack will be made npon the town by the partisans of El Mahdi.

London, January 13. A force of 84,000 rebels is reported to be advancing against Khartoum, the garrison of which is hi a mutinous condition.

Ottawa, January 12. ' In thp course of a speech at Toronto yesterday, the Marquis of Lansdowne, Governor-General of Canada, al'uded to the proposed federation of the Australasian colonies, and expressed a hope that the project would he carried out, and that it would he a great success, as the federation of the provinces now forming the Dominion of Canada had proved to be.

Mr Childers, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, has informed the colonial Agents-General t».°.t the concession recently made to Spain, in regard to the duties on wine, -vv ill be extended to the colonies. The communication states that the limit, thirty degrees spirit strength, must not he exceeded, and adds that Mr Childers will take into consideration the proposal of the Agents-General that a sliding scale of duties should be adopted.
