KAWHIA SPORTS.

The weather on the sth instant was exceptionally fine, and consequently a great number of persons, both European and Maori, were present at the above sports. Siuce the year l8 r )7 no Hports of the same kind have been held in Kawhia, but I think we may « ith safety pi edict that buch a long interval is not likely to occur again. In this instance the whole, arrangements were carried out with much tact and success by the committee who were appointed to carry out the duties of the meeting. It would be unjust to omit acknowledging the hospitality which wa-s dealt out to the European visitors by the members of the A.O. Force. There is, as yet, no hotel accommodation to be procured, and visitor-, would have been m a .sad predicament but for the attention shown them. Horseracing will never be a success in Kawhia until a more suitable racecourse is secured. This, however, will no doubt be got in due time. The following is a detailed account of the principal events :—: — 1 Milk House Race.— lst prize, £2. Entrance, OS. Mr Thomson's Wildman . . 1 Mr Newton's Black Gown . . 2 Te Ure, Wnoe, Tome, and Korihako also ran. Black Gown started first favourite for this event, but being in anything but good condition, and very indiffei'ently ridden, she failed to score a win. 1^ Milk House Race. —Ist prize, £4. Entrance, s<;, Mr Thomson's Wildman . . 1 Hautukia's Napier . . 2 Black Gown and Whangahn also started. Won easily by Wildman. Large Canoe Rack.— lst prize, £3. Distance, 2 miles. Ngatimahutas 1 Ngatimaniapotos 2 Europeans . . 3 This race was a splendid sight. There were fifty-four Maoris in the two canoe*, and they afforded the .spectators an excellent exhibition of paddling. When they finished there did not appear to be more than six feet between them. Swimming Race, 200yds.— 1st prize, £1 10s. Geo. Green ... . . . 1 Tuhua 2 Kawhia Cup (Ist event), 100 yds. — Ist prize, £5 ; 2nd, £1. Entrance, ss. E. Julian (scratch) .. . . 1 J. Lobb, (3yds.) . . 2 Tahi(4yds.) . ... 3 Also started Mulgueeny, Dale, Tawi Moke (4yds.), and Lambert (2yds.) An exceedingly bad btait was effected, Julian having all the best of it, which enabled him to wrest first place from Lobb, who was a good second. Running Long Jump.— Piize, £1 10s. E. Julian, 19ft. 10in 1 C. Lambert, 19ft. sin 2 D. O'Rourke, 19ft. ... 3 Hop, Stkp and Jump.— lst Prize, £1 10s. E. Julian, 41ft 1 Tawi, 39ft 2 J. Lobb, 38ft. . . .3 Kawhia Cup, 220 yds. (2nd event.) E. Julian ) m ; . C. Lambert]" lie W. Mulgueeny (syds.) 2 Also started J. Lobb and Dale (syds.), Maloney, Tahi, and Tawi (oyds.) This was a fine race, all the runners changing positions several times. A few yards from home Julian put on a spurt, which brought him level with Lambert. Half-mile Handicap. — Ist Prize, £2 10s. J. Dale (20yds.) 1 M. Rogers (10yds.) 2 Also started Mulgueeny (25yd«.), and Tahi (30yds.) Rogers led for the first quarter of a mile. Dale was, however, not to be denied, and in the end won cleverly. Kawhia Gup, (440yds.).— 3rd event. J. Lobb, (10yds.) 1 E. Julian (scratch), 2 C. Lambert (syds.) 3 Won in good style by Lobb. Mile Race, — Ist prize, £3. Entrance, ss. M. Rogers 1 J. Dale 2 Tug ok War.— lst prize, £3. Europeans 1 Maoris 2 Putting 301bs stone was won by D. O'Rourke. — (Own Correspondent.)
