PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL.

♦— The usual monthly meeting of the above council was held in the council chambers, Cambiidge, at 11 a.m. yesterday. Present : Messrs J. P. Campbell (chairman), E. Maclean, Brunskill, W. T. Firth, Chepmell, Ellis and Williams. Mr Sandes, engineer to the council, was in attendance. Leave of absence from the piesent meeting was granted to Mr J. 0. Firth. An application was received from Messrs Gonriskey and Stacy asking the council to put in a new giade on the tramway leading to the pioposed new battery site. It was determined that the particulars given in the application weic too vogue, and that additional information must be supplied by the applicants befoie the council can consider the matter. The engineer reported that he was about to slightly alter the "Queen of May" giade. Re rAiMNttS,— The Chairman drew attention to the fact that it appealed from the tramway committee's repoit that the tailings were emptied into the creek, and eventually carried into the river, wheieby there was a likelihood of the navigation being impeded, and that steps should be taken to prevent the same. Councillor Williams r>aid that it was impossible for the council to deal with two-thuds of the tailing-,, as that proportion was held in solution, and if prevented from finding a natuial outlet into the liver would find a way somehow, causing eventually moie damage than before.— Cr. W. T. Filth suggested that a committee should be appointed to watch the result of the present method of disposing of the tailings, and to communicate with Cahfoiman and othei mining authoiities as to the ulans adopted or their disposal. On the motion of Cr. Williams, seconded by Cr. Maclean, it was resolved that a committee, consisting of Cis. W. T. Firth and H. E. Whitaker and the chaiunan should be appointed to investigate the subject, and report at the next meeting of the council. A letter was received from Capfc. Bazloy, repoiting the unsafe condition of the bridge near O\ford. On the pioposition of the chairman, Cr. Chepmell and the engineer weie instructed to see the work done. After some discussion, it was agieed that the le-formiug of Kilgour-street, Waiorongomai, should be left for the chairman to arrange about. Thk Dog Tax.— Cr. Bvunskill suggested that a higher l.ite than that hitherto existing should be imposed on spotting dogt,. On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Cr. Brunskill, it was icsolved that the rate for the ensuing year should be 5s per head on bheep or cattle dog**, and' 10s per head on any other dogs. Mr ({ "Wattaifl was appointed sub-registrar for Taotaoroa riding, Mr Norris having left the district. The other sub-registrars weie re-appointed. Mr Chas. Tuck was appointed registrar. Mes-,is Statfoid and Whitaker applied for poimission to eiect a swing gate across the Te Aroha-Shaftesbury load, on the Wairakau run.— Gi anted. A letter was received from the chairman of the Waitoa Road Board re keeping in repair the toad between Hamilton and Te Aroha. The Waitoa Board were agieeable to do this work, but had no funds available, and requested* a subsidy for that portion of the moilc that could not be granted under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act.— The engineer stated that £100 would put tins road in fair lepair fioni the confiscation boundary to the Thames river, and the expenditure would be spiead over seveial months.— On the motion of the chaiunan £100 was voted for this purpose. The application of Mr Dynes for a slaughterhouse at Oxford was refused. In answer to an enquiry from Mr Chepmell, it was stated that a guarantee had been received that the old slaughterhouse on the Waiorongomai road should be removed. Extension of time was granted to Mr Forrest foi his contract on the Taotaoroa main road. The engineer reported that the contractors for the Aniwaniwhabiidge weic making good piogiess although the weather had been unfavourable. He also reported that the Piaure bridge was in a frightfully dangerous .state, and that the contractor appeared to think that he was personally irresponsible. It was resolved that the clerk be instructed to write to the contractor, also to the Distiict Engineer and Minister of Public Works, on the state of i the road to the bridge as it was a colonial j road and not under the control of the County. Mr Sandes also said that the Tauranga road was laid out flagged and pegged and he would be ready to call for tenders in a few days. The following accounts were passed for payment:— T. and S. Morrin, tramway account, £104 13s lid ;H. Gilfillan, tramway account, £31; F. A. Whitaker, bridges, £2 2-,; Cambridge Town Boaid, lent, £2 ; Wiseman, Te Aroha main road, £18. . The next meeting of the council is fixed for Wednesday, the 30th inst.
