(Received December sth, 2.25 p.m.) Opening of the Calcutta Exhibition. Calcuita, December 4th, evening. The International E dribition in this city was formally opened to-day, with jrreat cereui-my, by the >l.trquis of llipon, Vicaroy and (xovernor-(.Teneral of India. Tha attendance was less than expected, owing to the wet weather. His Excellency, in his speech on the occasion, trusted that India ana the foreign lutious .represented would derive great benefit from the exhibition as a means of establishing a friendly interest in one another, and providing a better knowledge of each others resources. He congratulated Mr Jombert, the promoter, on the success of his efforts, and neartily welcomed the Australian visitors to Calcutta. His Excellency concluded by declaring th« exhibition open. The courts are all ready, and the various exhibits make an excellent show.
(Received December sth, 11.50 a.m.) Commercial. Loxnox, Dccembor3. Consols are quoted at IOOJr, ox div. New Zealand securites remain at last quotations, viz., 5 par cent. 10-40 loan, 105 ; 5 per cent. 1889 loan, 104 ; 4^ per cent. 1879-1904 loan, 101 j. The market rate of discount has de* cliued to 2-j: per cent., and is now $ P er cent, below the bank rate. Adelaide wheat, ex store, has declined sixpence per quarter, and is quoted to-day at 40s , New Zealand wheat is quoted at 38s Gd to 43s Od, a decline of one shilling on best qualities. Adelaide flour remains at 325, ex store.
Wool Sales. At the wool salo3 to-day, the auction was firm, and an active demand was experienced for the various lots offered. The catalogue comprised 92,000 bales.
Frozen Meat.* The cargo of frozen mutton, consisting of 3050 cxi cues, which arrived on the 21st November, from Melbourne^-per steamship (taiuuiic, but which wasslored, jtnving to the market being temporarily glutted, was placed on the market to-day, when the carcases offered realised from b\d to 5Vd per lb. Tlie meat was in fair condition, Gut too fat.
Opening of Congress. (Received December 5, 1 p.m.) Washington', December 4, noon. The United States Congress was formally opened to-day. In the customary message on the occasion, President Arthur announced that the Government had decided to extend the relations ot the Union with the Eastern nations, and that it might possibly become necessary to co-operate with other poweis, with a view to secure liberty of ti'ade in the Congo Valley, and suggested that a policy of retaliation should be pursued towards countries levying taxes on importation of Amei ican produce. The message announces that the budget shows a surplus of thirty-nine million dollars, and concludes by mgmg that steps be taken to reconhtiuct the navy of the Union, and at the h.ime time to proceed with the various coast defences which were necessary.
