NATIVE AFFAIRS A T WA OTU.
Whatuaio lias received a letter from Mr Bryce to the effect that a- re-hearing wiJJ not be granted in the Waofcu South case, and advising him to refiain from hostile demonstrations. Whatuaio .and his people, however, are determined to fight the ques tion of a re-hearing so far as m their power ; their next step is likely to take the shape of a petition of the various hapus to the Government, embodying a request for a re-hearing. Should a. re-hearing not be granted, and the surveyors are instructed to proceed with the laying off of the sub-divisions of the block, it is hard to predict with any amount of cci taiuty, what phase the difficulty will then assume. Whatuaio, it is quite evident, ib bent on settling the question somehow or other, but whether to his own advantage or that of his opponents it is hard to say at present.
