, -Enquiries made reg.uding the letter alleged 'to have been written by the Maori members to the Aborigines Protection Society ha\ c elicited the fact that it was written in Wellington during the session by a European named Mcßeth. A copy of the letter lias since been offered to the Pi ess for publication at the model ate price of 2~> guineas, but it did not meet \\ ith a purchaser. It was alleged that the money was required by the nathes ; but Majoi Te Wheoro denies having ever authorised anything of the kind, and fuither wishes to contradict the (statement, cabled fioin London, in the latter that the New Zealand Government are preventing Tawhiao from visiting the Queen. Wednesday. Owing to the delay in Scott's arrival here, the 24 hours' contest between Edwards and him has been po.stponed until Ftiday and Saturday next week. Edw aids arrived to-day. The Colonial Secretary will visit Nelson to-moirow, when he will inspect the local institutions theie, also at Picton. Mr Buckley (of the firm of Buckley, Staffoid, and .Fitzhorbeit) is about to pioceed to Sydney in the intoi ests of Mr W. •T. M. Larnach, M.H.K., defendant in the libel action, Cook v. Larnnch. The plaintiff was formerly manager of the Colonial Bank of this city. Action has been pending for a long time, but will lie heaid at the December sittings of the Supreme Court, New South Wales. The diiectoi.s of the Queen of Beauty mine, Makara, have decided upon taking .1 ton of stuff from the claim, and having it tested at a Benlan fitted up at one ot the local foundries
