CAMBRIDGE TOWN ENDOWMENTS. A Valuable Concession.

Aitek a prolonged struggle with the authorities at Wellington, particularly the Lands Depai tment, the Cambridge Town Board, through the indefatigable exertions of their worthy chairman, Mr Wells, has obtained a concession of several valuable t >\vn allotments, Some time ago when Cambridge fhht entered on its development ojrtain allotments were laid off within the town us an endowment for a future corpoiate body. The act under which these endowments weie laid aside wan .subsequently repealed, and before the town became a corporation. Consequently the allotments were lost to the town, and were in the usual course put up for sale by the Waste Lands Board. Mr WelL had all along been making representations to the Government on the matter, and finally s\icceeded in getting them withdrawn from sale, so as to afford an opportunity of their being ve&ted in the town board through some fresh legislation. Wq are now glad to notice that the certificates of title to some of the allotments have been received, and that the leinainder are likely to come to hand at an early date. Certificates have been received for the following :— Allotment No. 585, near the old wharf, containing 6'^ acres ; No. 580, also adjoining wharf, 4| acres . No. 598, Public Hall site ; No. 600, public library site ; No. 571, near Hamilton Road, with frontage to Hall-street, 1 acre ; No. 13, frontage to William-street, | acre. Among the certificates yet to 'be received, are those- for, the market reserve, opposite , the N&tidnal ' Hotel jjtjja I'eaei've, a,d joining the

town board office ; allotments GIG and 017, for additional ground in connection with the Public Hall, to permit of the extension of that building. Application has bjen made for the latter allotments so as to allow of the board immediately carrying out the improvements to the hall. These endowments cannot fail to be a sourco of considerable revenue to the town.
