THE NEW ZEALAND MEAT FREEZING & STORAGE COMPANY. [BY TELEGRAPH. — OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Auckland, Monday.
Auckland, Monday. A meeting oi the Frozen Meat and Storage Company was lield to-day. The report stated : — (1) That the purchase of the business and property of the late firm of Fisher and Co. (Limited) had been completed ; (2) that the operations of the new company ai c being continued on the basis of the 'late firm of Fisher and Co. (Limited); (3) that all the shaies of the first issue of 20,000 have been taken up and tho calls paid ; (4) that negotiations for cutting down Emily Place arc on tho point of completion; (5) that plans and specifications for a poition of 4he necessary reclamation have been prepaiea and tenders will shortly be called for; (6) that preliminary measui os are being taken to secure stations on the overland route between Lichfield and Hawke's Bay; (7) th.it Messrs Eussell and Banks have been authorised to purchase the uecessary i efrigei ating machinery. The Chairman in moving the adoption of the report, said: —" Of course, as the report states, nothing has yet been done in the way of commencing refrigerating operations beyond ordering the machinery. By the time this niachineiy ariives the directors intend to have the reclamation ready for its reception. It will, perhaps, be expected that I should say something as to the Matama's caigo. Of course we all regret it did not turn out more successfully, but looking at the various difficulties surrounding the inauguration of all new industries, and especially an enterprise so surrounded with difficulties as the freezing of meat on board •ship, we need scarcely be surpiised, for until operations have really passed out of the region of experiment, we must be prepared for failure now and then. I do not look with any apprehension upon the failui c of the Mataura's cargo, if it teach New Zealand Meat Freezing Companies to exercise gi eater caie. ' It will ccitainly give them an opportunity of bringing more experience to bear on the vciy important work of placing New Zealand meat, which is admitted to be of a very high quality, on the London market m .such a condition as to render it at all times a saleable commodity. The question of thcoveiland loute i-< refoirod to in the report, the adoption of which I have just moved, and perhaps I may be permitted to say, by way of explaining more paiticulary what that means, that it is well-known thoic is a very cousideiable number of sheep existing in the Piovincial Distuct of Hawked Bay, the suiplus of which, increasing year by year, have been disposed of. We think that after the freezing operations now being inaugurated in the neighbomhood, together with sheep, which will probably be transmitted to Wellington for freezing, a surplus will remain quite beyond t!ie power of this company with its pioposed machinery to deal with, that is after dealing with our own stock." The repoit was adopted. In answer to Mr Bioiks, the chairman replied that the machinery they were likely to iecei\e was the Haslam. Howe\er, the matter was m the hands of Messrs Banks and Russell, who would do their best in the sliaieholdeifa' interests. The retiring directors, Messrs James Williamson, Buckland, Miudoch, Howaid, and Fisher, were re-elected.
