CAMBRIDGE ATHLETIC SPORTS.
: H iMiicAPrKRS : Mesbrs 0. Hitchman A. ! (t. Hughes, aud>H. Kcrr. Judge :Mr Walter Scott. Treasurer : Mr Robert Kirkwood. Starter : Mr C. Hitchman. Hon. Sec. : Mr H. Whitehorne Moore. These sports, which, from an athletic point of view, may b3 considered the best and most successful which have ever been ' witnessed in Waikato, came off on the Cambridge racecourse yesterday. The I weather was everything that could be expected, but the ground for ,some of the evontu, particularly the jumping, was rather hard. The attendance was not altogether *>o large as was expected, and the grandstand \v>w poorly patronised. Some were of opinion that had the sports been held nearer to Cambridge the attendance would have been much laiger. We cannot pass without notice the discourtesy extended by home peisons in charge of the gatet. to the members of the Press who applied for admission to the giound. The committee are to be congratulated upon the success which they achieved, and were exceedingly fortunate in securing the services of Mr H. W. Moore as secretary, and Mr W. Scott as judge. Indeed, these two gentlemen deserve almost the entire credit ot the meeting. In some cases the handicapping was not altogether what it might have been. The events, however, with few exceptions, were well contested, and excited considerable interest.
Maidkn Race, 150 yards — l&t prize, 30s -, 2nd, 10s. Thcvo wore four entries for this event, but only three faced the btarter, M. Bleazell, H. Martelli, and H. Carter. The event resulted as follows :— Ble.izell 1 MaiteUi . 2 Gaiter . . 3 Tin* eveut \vas splendidly contested, and created not a little c voitemeut. Kelly (4yds.), and J. McNeish (7yds.), also st.irfced. This was undoubtedly the most inteiasting contest of the day. It was geneially thought that the handicapping was. a little severe in some instances. Hood and Julian were the favourites, but the latter in point of s>t,irt had the advantage. A good start was made and Hood never lost the front position until the finish. Julian lav lemarkably well, a-> also did Craig. Patterson contested the fii bt place with Hood, but was unable to get to the front. The event w.i*. well contested, and ci eated much excitement. Time, ISj sees. This was the event of the day, but the haudicapijing was greatly at fault in giving McMillian 120 yards, he having won by about 50 yavdfc. Blair gave up before half way round, C, Craig likewise soon fell out of place, but continued till the end. A very exciting contest ensued between the second and third men, who kept alongside each other during the entire race, McFarlane beating his opponent by about a 'stop.
