All the available space on the grand stand was filled, and the demand for *pacv, and the ciusli on the lawn ,uid ten .ices was teirinc. The Hill was densely crowded, while the flat was largely patronised. Melbourne was completely dsseited affcei noon, .iu-1 Hottrko and Elizabetli-stioots presented an unusually quiet aspjet. Their "Kvcallencius the Oovernors of South Australia and Tasmania weie piesout. The com he was in adnni.4,ble condition, and no Melbourne Cup wab e\er .seen to better advantage than that of ISS3. The winner, Maitini-Henry, was ne\er whijiped fioni btart to finish,' and was splendidly lidden by Williamson. The 1 ing have been haul hit by Maifcini-Hemv winning 1 , as> he had been backed for thousands, both in doubles and straight out. His win bints the public. The time was the fastest on recoid, 3min. 30Uecs, buiiting that of Daniwell in 1871) by"a quarter of a second. In 1877 the Hon j\lr White also won the double event with Chester. Passing the abattoir, Linda v tested the lead from Aichie, and going at a tattling pace soon put two lengths between them, the lattei being clo-ely followed hy Maifcim-Heury, Aido-de-eamp, Viist Demon, Commotion, Fust Water, Despot, tritockwell, and Calnia ; Nicholas, heading the nick. Lmda kept her pohition till passing by tho .sheds, Aichie .still .second, and, coming up strong, Commotion was l mining in a {rood position in the centie of the couise, Martini-Homy being in close attendance upon him, w itli Nicholas, Stockwell, and Fii.st Water following, the lattei evidently ci coping up. Theie was immense excitement at this stage of the iace, and when at the half-mile post, Aichiw nished to the fiont, theie was a gieat shout of "Aichie wins'' fiom tho ciowd. Linda then held second place, and Aide-de-Camp thud, following by Calma, Commotion, Maitmi-Heniy, Fu-it Water, and Fii.st Deinoiid still well up, and going .stiong. Aichie S pride of place, ho\i«\oi', w-a» a t.hoit lived one foi, on appioachmg the home turn, Commotion u tested itfiomhim, and led into the btiaight, with Aide-dc-Camp and Claptiap following him side by side, Martini-Henry, First Demon, Fiist Watoi , and Despot ue\t, and Haidiiisconung up. Stock well now made an etioit. but the inn was' evidently too stiong for him. At the distance Commotion led by half-a-length, and Aide-de-Camp and Claptrap ne\t, but like a shot fiom a gun MaitiniHenry came out fiom the ciowd and passed them without any apparent ettoit on his pait, and amidst tho deafening cheer.) landed tho easiest of winner.--. First Water came Mny fast up the htiaight, and be.it Commotion foi second place bv a length, after a splendid laco between them. Sai duis, Fust Demon, Magnet, Aide-d"-Camp, Recoveiy, Aichie, and Nicholas followed in the mder named. The last three to inn in woi e Koh-i-nooi , Kmgsdale and Bis-Bis.
