He had been walking between the deck late in the afternoon, and was not nn>sed when the hatches weie put on foi the night. Theofnceis in chaige becoming anxious at his non-appsaiance, ordered the hatches to be taken off, when ho was discovered. It ih thought that whilst walking about with his hands in hr-i pockets, he must have tripped over the combings of the hatch. He fell a distance of fourteen foot, but was conscious when brought on deck, and the doctoi has hopes of hi 1 * life. His father is MrCt. W. Owen, of Auckland.
