ALEXANDRA. CONCERT.

Thk concert and dramatic entertainment in aid of the funds of St Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Alexandra, was a mo->t successful affair, thanks to the committee of ladies, with Mr.-. Sage at their head, who spared no exertion on their part that all might pass a pleasant evening. The hall was nicely decorated, chiefly through the energetic and indefatigable exertions of Mr Forster, and, as will be seen from the programme, several lady visitors gave their valuable .services in the musical paic of the entertainment. Part 1 : — Oveiture, Alexandra Brass Band, under the leadership of Bandmaster Sibley, " Owl Quadrilies.' The piauofoite duet by the Misses Hill, was a clever performance. The song " Gallants of England," Mr Johnson, wa-. well * received ; the song " Dear Little Shamrock," by Miss McWard, obtained an encore ; the song "Good-bye Mary Jane," by Mr Herlihy, brought down the house, and had to be repeated ; the trio "' Still the Moonbeams are Beaming," by the Misaes Lay tie, was, without exception, the feature of the evening, the voices blending most harmoniously. The demand for an encore was infleMble, to which the young ladied had to respond. The song "I Dream of the Fatherland," by Miss Hill, was sung with taste; the song " Take Back the Heart," by Mr Hansen, was well rendered ; the song " True to the La.st," by Miss Allen, was given in a faultless manner, and of course secured a unanimous encore, to which the young lady responded by lepeating tlie last verse. Tne pianoforte solo by Miss Stunner was a fair performance ; the. .song by Miss Wright, "Within a Mile of Edinbio' Town," greatly pleased the audience, and obtained an encore, to which the young lady lesponded. "Children's Voices," (with chorus), by Miss Finch, was nicely sung, but the chorus would have bean better for piactice, being too nuinoious. The comic .sons? " I Never Could Keep Still, •' Mr F. McMinn, obtained a repetition. The piano duet by Misses R. Morgan and C. Sage, was a very ci editable performance for two young girls, and the song " Eileen Alannah,"by Miss McWard, was well appiecin ted. The song "Powder Monkey," by Mr Halls, w.is a pleasing ditty ; "Tit for Tat," by Mi*s Fmch, was a charming tieat for the audience, and took immensely. The calls for an encore were loud and prolongued, and were gratified. The song " Never Tumble Tiouble," by Mr Johnson, which obtained aij encore, concluded the musical part of the entertainment. Captain Gascoigno most efficiently acted as chairman, in introducing the ladies and gentlemen who took part in the performance, while the .services of Mi\s Gascoigne, in playing the accompaniments, weie invaluable. At the conclusion of the conceit, Captain Gascoigne, on behalf of the committee, thanked those present for ( their attendance, and the assistance that had been rendered to them. After an interval of ten minutes the second pai t of the entertainment commenced with the pi oduction of a scene from the well-known drama of "Koboit Macaiic," by the membt'is of tlm Alexandra Amateur Dramatic Club. The cast was as follows :— "Kobeit Macaire," Mr C. Hallet : " Jaques'Stiop,"Mr I. Charlton ; "Picric," (waiter at the roadside inn), Mr Chappell ; " Sergt. Loupy," Mr O'Connor ; Gendaimcs, Messrs Halls and Hopkins. The scene chosen from the drama (the last one) was, without exception, about the best effoit the club have made. The portrayal of the villainous and bold-faced ruffian by Mr Hallett was inimitable, and the death scene was acted to the life. Mr Charlton's delineation of the character of the timoious and cowardly accomplice, " Jacques," was most enthusiastic. The minor characters sustained by Mr O'Connor ab " Seigt. Loupj, Mr Chappel as " Pierre," and tho Gendarmes by Messrs Halls and Hopkins weie all that cmld be desired. The usual dance concluded the evening's entertainment, which 1 called some &14. xat/Vj: nkws. T heai that at the meeting called by Wahanui for the 23rd inst., at Te Knit), that chief was not piesont, although a gieat number attended to hear what lie had to s.iy to them, and that there is a .shong feeling of indignation amongst many of the natives at his not attending, particulaily amongst those who had to find the food foi those who did attend there. Meetings are, I fancy, about played out with the natives, as they aie now noticing how long they ha\e been impoverishing themselves with no results. I hear it reported here that the hon. the Nati\ c Minister will very shortly go to Kawhia by steamer, and come overland with Tawhiao to Whatiwhatihoe, that Wahanui -\\ ill ba sent for, and that a final settlement between the two races will be come to, This is a native rcpoit. Some again hay that Wahanui will not consent to conic and see Mr Bryce here, but that the Native Minister will have to go to him if he desiies a coufeience. THK FORTHCOMING SPOUTS. Another public meeting was held at the Alexandra Hotel on Friday, At 7 p.m., to elect another race committee in the room of the committee elected last week, who had all resigned. On this occasion no trouble was found in solootiug, and the following gentlemen wore chosen :— Messrs Hinton, Mold, Pistrucoi, A. Abler and Newsham, with power to add to their number. — (Own Correspondent.)
