This has had a most depressing effect on the labour market, and, in consequence, few engagements have been m.ule. There is, howovoi, every appe.u.nioo of the we.ifclioi dealing up, when all will bo activity and bustle again. Current wages : Couples, toO to £85 ; ploughmen, £52 ; gaideneis, £00 pel annum, all found ; faun men, glooms, hotel men, 15s to 20s ; cooks, 25s to 30s ; youths and boys for countiy, 5-> to 1"X town, 53 to 10-, per week and found ; day labour, bush, ro.id and mil, 0s to <Ss ; contractors offenng !)s (3d ; carpenteis, blacksmiths, 8a to 10s ; biicklayeis and mason-, 10s to 12s per day. Female servants, good business has been done, countiy demands on the increase, wages firm. Bai maids, cooks, 15s to 30s ; housemaids, waitresses, laundresses, general servants, town and hotels, 10s to los ; for countiy, able to cook .and wash, 12s to 20.5 ; nursemaids and nursegirls, 5s to 10.s per week ; daii ynuids, £3fi to £40 ; governesses and housekeepers, £30 to £50 per annum.
