MO K ATI,

From information supplied to us (Taranaki Ifews) by Mr Joshua Jones, we stated last week that the reports circulated legarding a difficulty between the natives and Mr. Jones, in the matter of his lease, wore puio fabrications, and that Wahanui was perfectly satisfied with the lease as it stands. Everyone is interested in the opening of tho Mokau country, and hence the notoiiety attaching to Mr. Joshua Jones, and hence also our jeason for publishing news having reference to that gentleman's piivatc dealings with the natives. It is not our intention here to offer any opinion on tho attempt now being 1 made to acquire for one individual the possession of so large a block of land as 30,000 acres. That part of the subject may require our attention at some future tune. But it appears that the information we published, and which was also published by our local contemporary, was not above question. Mr 11. S. Thompson writing to the Herald challenges the whole of the inferences winch Mr. Jones wishes to convey. He concludes by saying " that it is now time that all misapprehension in regard to Mokau should cease ; and, in furtherance of that object, it is necessary for the tjublic to finally scout the idea that Mr Joshua Jones has the confidence either of the native owners, or of the Government he libels by associating; with himself." Heremia to Aria has sent the following letter to the Waitara Pi ess: — "Having a desire that all that transpires concerning Mokau shall have full publicity, I -\uito to infoiin you, that finding from' a copy of a. document, called Mi Jones' lease, which has been supplied to us, that the whole of tho contents were contrary to our wishes, and that wo weie until now petfectly ignoiant of the provision-, of the said document, I have determined to have nothing moic to do with Mr Joshua Jones or his p.ipeis, T write this for myself and my people. " Wo repioduce these extracts out of a desiu* to set ourselves right w ith our readers, who have a light to near both sides of the c.ise. We like fair play, and expect that when information in given to us for publication, it shall at lonit be tho truth. Our readers may judge for themselves jn this matter, and, as we say, loving fan play, we arc willing to accord Mr Joshua Jones the right of reply.
