WELLINGTON, Last Night.
At the Supreme Court an action was brought by the Avidow of the late George DWon, who wasdrownedoff thes.o. Taiaroajfc some few months ago, to recover from th^F New Zealand Accident Insurance Company the sum of £500 upon the policy issued to the deceased about two years ago. The counsel for the defence admitted all the plaintiff's allegations, with the exception of that C clause which declared that deceased Was in I his sane mind when he met hia death in ' June last. Evidence was taken to the , effect that Dixon, who was a well-known manufacturei of aerated wateis in Wellington, had visited Auckland in June last, and on returning home, via the East Coabt, by the steamer |Taiaroa, was lost overboard off Cape Turnagaiu.— Deceased's wife deposed that he was usually a bad sailor. Her husband was not an intemperate man. She* had not known him get intoxicated.— Dr Cowell, of Napier, deposed that he was called off to the Taiaroa in June last, when, he was told his services were required in a case of delirium tremens. Deceased's A symptoms were such as would result from 1 alcoholic poisoning. He asked Dixon what 1 had brought him to this state, and he said "he had been carrying on a bit." John Warren, steward on the Taiaroa, gave evidence as to what took place when deceased? went overboard. In cross-examination, hes * said he was convinced that deceased had thrown himself overboard. Further evidence will be taken to-morrow. The action brought against the bonciwuett of Chas. White will be aigued in Banco. A strong N.W. gale has been blowing without intermission all day. No damage is reported.
