PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL.
The usual monthly meeting of the above body was held at the council chambers, Cambridge, on Wednesday morning hibt. Present : Cr». J. P. Campbell (chairman), J. C. Firth, W. L. C. William-,, E. Maclean, W. T. Filth and Ellis. The minutes weie read and confirmed, and the outgoing conespondence disposed of. Road AT Waiokonuomai.— A communication was leceived fiom the Governor-, of the Thames High School, in leplyto an application from the council asking for a giant of £100 towauls the construction of a road from the main road, tluough Wilson's propeity to the Waioroiigomai township. The communication stated that the board fully acknowledged the force of the council's argument, and fully appreciated tho importance of the work, but as they (the board) were not in funds they could not entertain the application just now. — On the motion of Cr. Firth, the clerk was instructed to write to the Board of Governors, telling them the council would wait until they woie in funds, when they would be glad to receive the amount asked for towards the work. Pi umi BmncK. — The Clerk stated that he had not received any further communication from tho Public Works Department regarding the le-erection of the above structure. — Ci. Firth drew attention to the fact that beveral of the Southern members, making a tour through the district, had passed over the bridge and complained of its awful state. — It was agreed, on the motion of Cr. J. C. Firth, to write to the Minister for Public Works, urging the speedy erection of the biidge, and referring him to Mr Shrimski, M.H.R., for his opinion on the matter. Tk Ahoha GoiiDi-'iEiiDs Revenue. — The Chairman drew attention to the difference in the amount of revenue which Mr Wilson, collector at Te Aroha, had collected, and the amount the council had received from the Government. There was a discrepancy of something like £800. It could not be that all this amount went in costs and expenses. The deficiency occurred in 1881. Cr. Whitaker and himself had fully enquired into the matter when at the Aroha. It was proper that they should communicate with the Government, and enquire as to the cause of the discrepancy. — On the motion of Cr. Firth, it was agreed : " That as a discrepancy of about £800 is alleged to exist between the amounts received from the Te Aroha Goldfield and the total sums received by this council, the chairman be requested to wire, urgent, to the Under-Secretary for Mines, asking him to cause enquiries to be made into the matter without delay, and if found to be as stated, asking that such sum be wired without delay to the council." Punt and Road at Shaftehbuky.— -A communication having been received from Mr E. Y. Cox on the above matters, asking to have a punt on the river there subsidised by the council, and the road through the townihip formed immediately, it was agreed to allow the question of the punt to remain in abeyance until the bridge at Te Aroha was completed, when the punt there might be available. Roads and Bridges Construction Act. — Oil the motion of Cr. J. C. Firth (a communication from the Government on th§ matter having been read, it wag agreed, that all the applications in thft county under the Road.B and. Bridges Construction Act be reduced pro rata five-twelfths, so as to brln 5 the total amounts under £5000. The Tkasiway.— A letter was received from Mr Gilfillan, tramway works, Waiorongomai, stating that £1500 would be required > to complete the works. Thack at Te Aroha.— Mr Purchas, engineer, said ho" had visited the hew find at Te Aroha with a view tp reporting on the construction of ft track thereto. It would co^t £125 to make the jtt-ack referred to. It' was unanimously; agrced> to defer action in the matter for the present. SnuiciNfj a RAm— On the motion of Cr. J. C. .Firth, it, w,is agreed to strike & peparate rate of in tho £in the outlying district of Patetere, to bo payable on the 24th. October, and that Mr Tuck be appointed^ collector. Railway to Morbinsvim,e. — The Chairman drew attention to the delay which had been experienced in the opening; of line of rail. Tho formation liad~ now been finished for <?omc considerable 'time past, and the railway bridge was so far completed as to permit of the material for the permanent way, and rolling stock being brought over. The road was now cairying a heavy traffic, and were this line opened it would greatly, relievo the road boards and facilitate traffic.'— Cr. Firth thought that in the present condition of the bridge at Hamilton, lie believed a locomotive could be got across without danger, and the trucks could be pulled over by hand. It was then unammonsly agreed, "That as the traffic between Waikato and Te Aroha is fast increasing, this council would respectfully, but strongly, urge upon the him. the Minister for Public Works the necessity of at once calling for tenders for laying the permanent way on the railway line between Hamilton and Morrinsville, and bo£ to .suggest that should the bridge not be considered ready for heavy traffic, & locomotive should be taken across, and the rails and sleepers trucked over. FORMING AND (tU.YVEI.LING CONTRACT. — The tender of Messrs A. and J. Forrest and Co., of £144 for earthworks, and 2s 4jd per yard for gravelling, was accepted for the work on the C.unbridge-Taotaoroa road. HoKuroßA Bridges.— No tenders were received for this work, and it was agreed to evteud the time for receiving the &amo. Several accounts were passed for payment, and the mooting terminated. M
Special Meeting. A rate of three-dovenths of a penny in the % Wtib struck on all rateable property in the Aroha ridinjj under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act.
