Mmoji CAXTun, of thoiioyjil Engineers, an officer of high standing 1 , has been especially selected to come to Now Zealand in connection with the scheme of harbour defence, on account of his special qualifications for the duty unti listed to him. He lias been 24 years in active service, and was employed under His Excolloncy Sir William J ervois on the defences of Coi k Harhom, subsequently at Gibraltar, and later still in rcpoiting on the Falkland Island and their capabilities as a naval coaling station, etc. He was sent out at the request of Sir William Jervois to assist His Excellency in respect of the executive work connected with designing a thorough system of defence. Major Cantley will act under His Excellency.
