A case of some interest to publican*^ has been decided in the Supreme Cour^^ in Banco. The appellant, William Light, licensee of the Queen's Hotel, was convictert by Mr Hardcntle, R.M., under section ]oo of the Licensing Act, 1881, , for permitting au unlawful game to be played in his licensed public-house, after the hour of closing. The game played was euchre, and it was contended, by counsel by the appellmt, that the section only applied to bJliards, bagatelle, and other q inies of the sa-ne Kind, and not to games with cards. The Court upheld this view, pointing out the fact ot playing a card game for money was met by section 149. The appeal was therefore allow cd. List Night. Messrs Redmond, M.P., and Walsh, the Lind Leagm-rs, arrived heic from Auckland in the steamer Taiurca this moining, when they were met on the wharf by sevcial friends. They left again for Hokitika, via Christohurch, by - steamer, at 4 this afternoon. The tiilwvtiou Army have put chased the lemainder of the lease of ,the Apollo Hall, which has about nine years to run. The place will be fitted up as a barrack.
