The gum market continues quiet with no change in the value. The receipts for September amount to about 180 tons. Maize has declined, and may be quoted at 2a lOd to 3s. .Southern flour appears to Lave a downward tendency, being now worth £11 to £12 a ton.

Narrow Escape. Captain Haultain, of the ketch Reliance, was knocked over-hoard at Whangarei Heads, and struck out for the shore three miles off. He was three and ci-half hours battling against the heavy sea, and reached the shore safely in an exhausted condition. He is a son of Colonel Haultain.
