DRAINING.
"♦ To THE EDITOR. Sir, — I have been surprised at see very crooked drains in some of the large Waikato swamps. It is no exaggeration to say there are some that wind about so much that they would measure three times greater in length that if they were made straight. One of the least objections to such drains is, they cost three times the money in the first instance. Then two-thirds of the fall is lost, and they are more apt to get choked. Stock are more likely to get into them, and less likely to be seen if they do. When the land is dry enough to be worked, crooked drains will prove such a nuisance, that sooner or later, they will be filled in and straight ones made instead. Some people object to straight - drains, as they may have" to cut extra deep in plans to set,their levels, but even if they had 'to ion so,ut would of te"n\be a-veryseoondafy,
