THE CAMBRIDGE RAILWAY STATION SITE.

A. XUMDK.K of property-holders, from whom the Government have taken the site for the above railway station, complain, and we think justly too, of the way in which they have huen treated in the matter. Mr Macflailane, remesentiug the Government, came up some time ago to value the land, and agreed with certain parties to pay them £2 a foot. This was considered :v fair price, it being the present market value, Believing hi the soundness of Mr Macffarlane's promise, some of the parties from whom property was taken went and bought elsewhere on the strength of the money which they were to receive for their interest. Their disappointment may moic easily be imagined than described, when told by letter from Mr Macffarhine that they w ould only get 30a a foot. One gentleman had paid this figure when he bought I his allotment some considerable time previous, and having made certaiu improvements, and kept it on hand for some time", naturally expected a higher price than he paid. Mr Macfarlane- &eems to have acted like a man who was fully aware that the aggrieved parties would rather take the price offered than bring the matter into the arbitration court, where the expenses of the law would run away with the entire purchase money. Those persons who have been so led astray by the promise made them have suffered a considerable loss, aud we hope that the matter will not be finally settled ujitilthe Government are made acquainted with the fact. Again, not only this, buteven money which has been promised has not the been paid, and thus a great inconvenience and injustice has been experienced. All those so wronged should combine, aud make their, representations in the proper quarter.'wheirhe have little doubt redress will be afforded them. .
