As the 10 o'clock goods train from Clinton for Invercargill was neatiug Wairungalast night, John Henderson, the fireman, was shot dead by a man unknown from the bank alongside the line. The tr.iin put back to Clinton. The brakesman and driver were on the engine at the time. Henderson, who leaves «v wife and family, resided at Invercargill. Thcic is no clue to the perpetrator of the cowardly act. Later. No fresh information rr the minder is to hand. The guaid, Duncan, says he saw two flashes, and immediately after | the second the deceased throw up Ins arms, exclaiming " Oh ! Peter," to Peter Duncan, the drher of the engine, and expired. Those on the tram became frightened, and extinguished all the lights, and backed the tram to Clinton. Inspector Weldou aud two detectives proceeded to Clintou this morning. Later. Information to hand concerning the mysterious aiiair at Clinton is still very meagre. The following telegiam was leceivecl by the railway authorties this afternoon :—": — " lie minder, nothing has yet ttanspired to tluow any light on the subject. The police aie actively employed searching for any traces." The floating £>tar\s correspondent at Clinton telegraphs :—": — " A reliable authority informs me that a slight clue has been obtained as to the murderer, who, it is declared, fired two shots, which lodged in Hendersons left breast and arm. The body ncAv lie 3 at the Prince of Wales Hotel awaiting au inquest, which will probably be helu on Monday."
