Alleged Rape. Friedrick Trieue, a German, was brought up on remand, charged with indecently assaulting Mrs Sophia Coo on the sth inst., at Paterangi. Mrs Coe, being sworn, deposed that on the night of the sth inst., the prisoner came to her house— her husband being absent— and asked for a cup of tea, which she gave him (witness then described the assault). She told him to go a\vny,^ut Itc refused, when she left the h0%30 t iking her children with her, and stayc<L at Mr Meredith's all night. Theodore John Meredith, contractor, being sworn, deposed that MYa Coe came to his house on the night of the sth inst., and told him what had occurred, and asked him to let one of his boys return with her to her house, as she was afraid to return by herself. Witness asked her to stay all night, which she did. In the morning witness saw a man going along the road, when Mrs Coe recognised him as the man who was at her house the night betoic. She then left for her house taking her childien with her. Constable Connor, being sworn, deposed to arresting the prisoner at Whatiwhatihoe. Prisoner made a statement denying Mrs Coe's evidence. As the prosecu trig's evidence was not vciy clear, his Worship, taking into consideiation that the prisorer had been locked up for a week, g.ive him the benefit of the doubt, and discharged him.
