CAMBRIDGE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

* Thk usual monthly meeting of tlie above school committee was held at the schoolhouse, Cambridge JEast, on Tuesday evening last. Present : The Rev. H. R. Dews* bury, Messrs E. Hosking (chairman), Sargent, Hewitt, and Wright. UoRRhsi'ONDENCi:.— A letter wa3 ro> ceived fiotn the board, stating that a new regulation had been made regarding matters of health. Instead of one halfhour per week being given to instruction iv this matter, two half-hours had been arranged for. If desiied by the committee, Dr. Richardson's "Temperance Lessons Book " might be used in addition to the other class books, viz. : — Buck ton's " Health in the House," and Berner's " Jfirat Lessons on Health." It was agreed to let matters stand as at present, no alteration being thought desirable.—Mr Wilson, High School teacher, applied for leave of absence from school to attend the presentation of diplomas of degrees, which takes place in Auckland on the 16th inst,— lt Was agreed to grant the application on the motion of Mr E. Hewitt. Alteration of School Age.— Mr James G. Carr, chairman of the Auckland Schools Committee, forwarded a circular, referring to the action of the Board of Education affirming the desirability of altering the present limit of school ngo (five years) to seven years, the Auckland committee and inviting the opinion of the Cambridge committee. It was the unanimous conviction of those present that an alteration was not advisable. It was then agreed, on the motion of the Rev. Mr Dowsbnry, that the chairman write to Mr Carr stating that the committee would not recommend an alteration as suggested by the board. School Fuxd Allowance.— A circular notifying that a sum of £15 had been paid to the credit of the school fund account, for the half-year ending 31st December, ISB3, was read.— The Chairman explained that the Cambridge school was the only school of its status in the colon} 1 which received such a small amount. * Those present thought that an application should be made for a larger sum. It was agreed that, as the present grant was inadequate to cover the general expenditure of the school, representations be made to the board asking for a larger sum. The Distribution* of Prizes. — The chairman referred at some considerable length to the way in which the prizes for merit were gained and distributed amongst the pupils. He thought the boy who exemplified the most proficiency as a scholar should be the one rewarded. —The Rev. Mr Dewsbuiy also spoke on the matter at some lenAth, pointing out the invidious nature of the present system of reward for merit. It was agreed, on the motion of Mr Sargent, that at the end of the next term the children be subjected to an examination, either verbal or written, as the committee may then decide, and that the prizes be awarded in accordance with the results then obtained.
