ALEXANDRA.

'!The performance by the members of the Alexandra Diamatic Club on MonI day evening last was, without exception, | the greatest success that has ever attended the clubs' efforts to amuse, and at the same time benefit, the residents of our township. The weather on that day was most delightful, and the histrionic fame of the lady and gentleman memhets of the club having reached all our neighbouring settlements, the consequence was the attendance of a large number of Visitors from Te Awamutu, Kihikihi, and other settlements. The stage has been entirely rented by the members, and presented a most pleasing appeal ancc, that -would do credit to a more pretentious township than tins. The new scenerj r , which had been painted especially for the occasion by the club* scenic artist, Mr Helps, was, on the rising; of the curtain, greeted with rounds of applause. The Alexandra Band, under the ! leadeiship of Bandmaster Sibley, al&o gieatly contributed to the enjoyment, | tl\Pi c being a marked improvement since that gentleman took over their instruction ; it is now without doubt the Piemier Brass Band of the Waikato. By request the favourite dtama "Self Accusation "or "A Biothers Love" was the lirst piece in u hich the members made their appearance. The acting of all who took part in it was as near perfection as possible to be expected from a stiictly amateur performance, the piece has alleady been riticised by one of your correspondents who was present on the first occasion. Consequently, for me to go through it again would be a meie repetition. I have only to say again it was a most successful performance all through, and fiom beginning to end went off without a hitch, the prompter's voice being j only conspicuous by absence. The screaming farce "Boots at the Swan" was the after piece, with Mr Charlton as the "Boot?," Jiiul it passed off most swimmingly; the " VippmV get up alone was enough to make it a success, and caused roars of laughter ; his love for " jam " was, however, evidently no acting. I can only add that to the fcta»e manager, Mr Hallett, the lady amateuis, and to every member who took pait in the performance, credit and the thanks of those who had the good fortune to be present for a most enjoyable evening aic due. The dance atteiwaids was kept up with spirit until 2 p.m. I aiii sorry to have, notwithstanding the remonstrance of your correspondent rathe picvious performance, to remaik on the bad taste of a few persons, not boys, but those who should know better, keeping up their conversation at the time the actors were on the stage, their conduct was most ieprehcnsil>lc, and caused a deal of annoyance, the club will in self-defence have, if it occurs again, to take some strong measures to put down the nuisance. — [Own Correspondent, August '2nd.]
