DUNEDIN, Tuesday.
At the goal inquiry to clay, Captain Hume gave evidence. The most interesting portions had reference to a letter written by Mr Caldwell to him in connection with certain complaints about the warders being out of uniform, In this letter Mr Caldwell asserts that Inspector Weldon. of the local police force, had frequently expressed hostile feelings to the gaol management, and he added that Mr Weldon had been an unsuccessful candidate for the position of gaoler when he (Mr Caldwell) was appointed. Mr Weldon was communicated with as to the mattei'b, and fatated that when the office was vacant he was asked to accept it, but declined, and was certainly not a candidate. The other portions of his evidence dealt with a variety of subjects. Mr Walter Miller, of the Roxburgh station, some time ago sent 145 sheep to the local refrigerating works. He got 4s 3d each for the skins, an advance at the rate of 2^d per lb. on the carcases, and if the home market remains as at present when his sheep arrive, he well get 2d per lb. more. This will bring the net return per sheep up to 29s after payi»g all .expenses. At the local yards the price they would have brought would have. been only 13s or 14a. Last Night. Joseph Strong has now challenged Geo. Eobertson for the Caledonian Society's champion belt foy Border wrestling. Strong was champion at last year's games, but forfeited the belt without a contest to llobcrtson, when the latter challenged him in March, and now tries to recover his laurels.
