TOATAOROA HIGHWAY BOARD.
The usual monthly meeting of the above body was hold at the Duke of Cambridge Hotel, Cambridge, on Tuesday morning 'last. Present :— Messrs Hunt (chairman), Ellis, Brunskill, and Norris. A letter was read from Mr W. T. Firth, Matamata, in reference to a portion of a road in that locality which had ' become dangerous through the action of a ' spring.' — Mr Ellis reported he had sent out men, and had the place repaired in a . temporary way. , ;<; < 'T ( he:ohairmanand Mr Ellis were authorised' to arrange, if possible, with Mr Thomas Bruce to rebuild' Wattem's • bridge.-^Fhe' chairman and Mr, Brunskill were deputed to report upon the state ; of /Whitehall ; roadv— The - ". olerk<,< f waif»itfB'truoted<''to write .to'i'MP'

The body of the late Howard Payne, the author of the popular song " Homo,' Sweet Home, " which was interred at Tangier, on the northern coast of Africa, has been exhumed and conveyed to Washington, United States, he having been an American citizen. The reinterment took place the other clay at Washington, and was made the occasion for a grand ceremonial. President Arthur was among the large number of distinguished men present. That the Chinese have a great history before them, as well as a great history behind them, says an English writer, no one that knows them can doubt. There is no Oriental race than can compare with them for energy of character. Dr Murdoch, of the Keligious Tract Society, London, writes after a visit to China, " For many reasons, the evangelisation of China is the greatest enterprise before the Christian Church."
