LECTURE AT CAMBRIDGE.

« The Rev. C. Carter, minister of the Ponsonby ißiptisf Church, delivered his; popular lecture on u Ceylon and Buddhism," in aid , of the new Baptist Tabernacle, iin the' Cambridge Public Hall on Monday evening last. The attendance wnritfjpt'^D large {$ might have been expeo6*fi; but thjs to a great extent may be accounted for, by the shortness of the notice givenl The chair was occupied by Mr Morris, who introduced the lecturer in a few well-selected remarks. The rev. gentleman, who had spent alout twenty years of liis life in missionary work in Ceylon, narrated a large number of interesting incidents which he experienced during his sojourn in that country. He dwelt at considerable length on the customs and manners of the people, and gave in detail the names, habits, and manners of various insects, reptile animals and other , pests with whicli Ceylon is infected. The products and flora of the island also received a fair share of attention. He then dealt at considerable length with the principles of the Buddhist creed, its peculiar features, and how it stood in respect to Christianity. The Wesleyan and Baptist Churches had numerous stations interspersed throughout the country, and the good work which the missionaries were doing was becoming daily more evident. The lecture, which lasted over two hours, was full of interest, and afforded both entertainment and instruction, and was accorded a most attentive hearing. The lecturer received a hearty vote of thanks at the conclusion, and the mdeting was brought to a close by the singing of the Doxology.
