CAMBRIDGE TOWN BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of the above body was held at the town board office, Cambridge, on Monday evening List. There were present : Crs. Wells (chairman,) Johnson, Clark, Hewitt and Richardson. The Cambridge Licensing Difficulty. — The matter of the payment of the Cambridge publicans' licensing fees to the clerk of the county council, Capt. McPherson, and the issuing of Cambridge licensing certificates by that officer was brought forward for review. The Chairman spoke on the matter at some length, bringing forward and explaining the various sections of the Licensing Act, 1881, and the subsequent amendment of the same. [These have already been made public by letter.] The licensing certificates at present held by the Cambridge hotelkeepers were null and void, and if produced in a court of law would not be recognised. Unless the certificates bore the signature o\ the town board secretary, Mr J. P. Thomson, they were entirely useless. Consequently, the boai-d could at any minute close the hotels, for, legally speaking, they were selling without a license. The Chairman, in conclusion, asked the board to support the action he had taken in the matter by demanding the money which the council had wiongly received, but to allow the matter to stand over till the next meeting of the coun oil. — Cr. Johnson, in supporting the suggestion of Cr. Wells, said not only should they support the action of that gentleman, but they Mould be lacking in their duty if they did not accord him their warmest thanks for the way in which he had proceeded in the matter in dispute. A motion embodying the chairman's sugee&tion was then put and carried. — Cr. Clark stated that so far as he understood the council would have to refund the money to the publicans themselves. A Disputed Account, — Capt. Sontter, of the Waikato Steam Navigation Company, wrote saying that in receiving 1 a payment of account from the board, a sum of £2G had been deducted from the amount in consideration of a disputed account for rent for the wharf, alleged to be due by the company to the board. As this was a matter long in dispute, he thought it was hardly fair to deduct tho amount now. He would now propose they divide the sum (£2G). After some discussion, on the motion of Cr. Johnson, this course was agreed upon. Town Dbunaoe.— The question of drainage in the vicinity of the Lake was brought forward. The diaiuage pipes having been broken it was found necessary, in order to prevent the bank from being washed away, to divert the water in another direction. The surfacemen complained that some mischievous person was in the habit of undoing his work, as whenerer he diverted the water by erecting a temporary dam it was always knocked down, and the water allowed to take its course. — Cr. Johnson did not see what they had £;ot to do with the rain domagingthebankof theLakc. Thatwasa matter for the domain board to look after. — It was then shown that the town boairt, through having put in the drain pipes there, were to that extent interested. — Cr. Hewitt thought the attentiou of the riomiin board should be diawn to the drainage at the corner ot Victoria-street and Thornton road.— Cr. Richardson was of opinion that if a good heavy shower of lain came, and the water allowed to drain over the lake as at present, it was not at all exaggerating to anticipate that the lake would extend its dimensions as far as the church corner in oue night, and by carrying away a portion of the road, stop traffic and put the town to unlimited and inconceivable expense. He would instance the lirge wash at Paeroa. — Cr. Johnson persisted that the domain board should be allowed to proceed in the matter.— lt was finally agreed that the suinph at the church corner be filled in, to prevent the water finding its way over the bank of the lake. General. —lt was agreed to allow the Cambridge Highway Board the use of tho board office at an annual rental of £3 ; the office to be used weekly, and on Saturday afternoon. Messrs Ruse and Clements' Claim. « In this matter it was stated that a second payment was to be made on the Ist July. Mr Clements had requested that a cheque for the amount bo forwarded to his solicitors. —It was agreed to write to Messrs Herketh and Richmond, asking that the matter be allowed to stand over to the end of the month, when the board would be in funds. j Gouse on Road. — It was agreed to give the owners of property on the Hamilton road notice to clear the gorse from the front of their property. Town Board Room. —Mr Gillett, National Hotel, was allowed the use of the town board room for sample room purposes at an annual rental of £13. The Pound.— Cr. Hewitt said his attention had been drawn to the fact that two head of cattle had been sold out of the pound at 2s Gd each, and that one of them had been sold afterwards for 30s. He thought it would pay the board to send the bellman round before the sale, so as to draw an attendance. Of late several head of impounded beasts had been sold at considerable loss to the board. A good horse, which went well in harness, had^been sold for 5s. — It was agreed, in accordance with Cr. Hewitt's suggestion, to employ the services of the bellman in future. Accounts. — Alarge number of accounts were passed, for payment. This was all the business,
