LATEST AUCKLAND NEWS. [BY TELEGRAPH.-OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

Supreme Court. AucKTA>fi), Last Night, lloni RT l'viu, Houiti;, eonwuted of indecent ns^nnlt on a domestic servant at the Si'ttlci's llotel, Mougomii, was sentenced to three yeai*. Daniel Scallon, tonnerly landlord of the Nottingham C.istlo Hotel, was found guilty of perjury. Sentence defened.

N.Z.L. and M. Company. At the meeting of the Loan and Mercantile Agency (Jomp.my, Mr Thomas Russell (chaiim.ui) tjaul lie was happy to tell them tli.it the reports from the agencies showed the company's business evetywheie satisfactory; that in some places it was highly satisfactory, and in otheis there were promises of openings which they were not even able to avail themselves of, through the inadequacy of the company's capital for undertaking the business offeied. After commenting in congratulatory terms upon the steadily incie.ibing ptospeuty of the colony and commensurate advance of the company, the chairman proceeded to point to the plans of a handsome new block buildings which the company was now erecting in Melbourne as offiies and woolstores, in order to &tiengthen the valuable connection which they had formed over there. He also said that he would shortly be returning to England, and when he met the London board of directors he would move them to provide for additional capital, so as to afford the means for widening the field of the company's operations.

Rotorua Railway. The Star's Wellington cerrespondent &ends the following re the Rotorua Kiilway which the local directors pronounce authentic: — •' Since the opening of the session Messrs Peacock, Swansoh, Hurst, and Mitchelson have been working unremittingly for the purpose of persuading Government t^recede from the rather unfriendly attituql^iUiey had taken up with regard to the Rotoma Railway Company's application. /I/i3 r hen the Mayor and Dr. Campbell wefe down heie a few weeks ago, the Minister for Lauds, who id the only real obstruction, in the way, was suave but inflexible, and the emissaries, foiled at every point, returned home in disgust. Sinde thVn Mr Peacock has been actively negotiating, and between him and the managing* directors at Auckland, there has been a constant interchange of telegram's. Ha has conducted the business with considerable address, and such a notable measure of success that the Government have compromised matters so far as to consent to the natives making what terms they please, either handing over to the company blocks of land as endowments for the purpose of facilitating the undertaking, or else selling- a portion of their lands in exchange for railway shares. This is a virtual sur* render ef the whole . situation. There is just one point which is important enough to warrant further negotiation. Government require that , all, dealings with the natives shall be .conducted through them, whereas the railway company wish to appoint an agent, to bjp.ap,proved by the Government, jwho deal direct with the 'natives.., Now M|

Rolleston knows very well that the agent will be Mr Fenton, for whom hehasastrong aversion, and on that ground ho is loth to give way. The company on the other hand say that their negotiations would bo considerably prejudiced by any interference on the part of Government, of whom the natives are suspicious. Theic is a strong prpbability that on this point Government will yield. The rapproc/iwent 60 far is significant, and full compliance with all the company's wishes is confidently anticipated.
