CHARGE OF UTTERING A FORGED CHEQUE.
A. woman named Anne Qainn, wife of P. Quinn, who resides at Frankton. was brought up at the Police Court, Hamilton, yesterday, before Mr Northcroft, R.M., on a charge of uttering a forged cheque, purporting to be signed by Mr Isaac Coates for £40, in favour of accused's husband. Sergt. McGovern detailed the circumstances of the case. It appeared that accused presented the cheque on Friday last at the Bank of New Zealand, but Mr White, the accoutitant, suspected that the signature was a forgery, aud detained the cheque until enquiries should be made. Subsequently the matter was placed in the hands of the police. The accused asserted that she had received the chequs through the post, and presuming it to be genuine had attempted to cash it. Mr McGovern applied for a remand till the following day, in order that accused might obtain legal advice. His Worship granted the remand, and prisoner was admitted to bail in two sureties of £100 each, aud her husband's for a like amount.
