S. PETER'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, CAMBRIDGE.

A MKtTiXG was held at S. Peter's Catholic Church, Can.biklge, on June 10th, presided over by the llev. Father Noboa. Mr Sheehan acted as chairman. At the request of the rev. Father, Mr Sheehan read a statement of the leasona For calling together the parishioners. Fiistly, the rev. Father wished to thank the members of the committee for the great interest they had taken in the financial affairs of the church during the absence of a lesident priest. Now, however, that he was living amongst them he would like to undertake himself all all that appertained to divine worship and the presbytery, leaving to the committee the one object for which they ware instituted — the. payment of the church debt. Secondly, that to defray the expenses of diune worship it was necessaiy to have an annual sum of £30, for which the rev. Father counted only only on the chanty of the Catholics ; but he had made the following resolutions : that he would not contract a new debt, and that he would not talk of money matters in the church. Mr Brenuan had been naned as collector of the church fund. Regarding the debt, it has been 1 educed to £9S, owing still to the bank, and it is hoped that this amount will be paid after the bazaar takes place in September. 'J he assembly having hoard and approved the statements made on the p.ut of the lev. Father Isoboa by Mr Sheehan, it was resolved as follows :—- "That the present committee shall remain in olfice till the debt is paid." " That a general fund shall be opened for the expenses entailed by diviue worship, and the Piesbytcry." " That the church debt account shall be kept separately, the committee having control only of the church debt account." "That the general fund account shall be managed as follows : All subscriptions, collections, and any money left over fiom the amount gained by the bazaar (after having paid o(F the church debt), as also the fium gained by the annual St. Patrick's Day conceit, shall be given in aid of the general fund, which moneys would be paid to a separate acconnt in the Bank, to be drawn therefrom by cheques signed by two members of the congregation, probably Mr Dogherty and Mr Breunan, and counter-signed by the pi lest." Mr Sheehan spoke very warmly about the miserable provision made for the l esident clergyman ; as far as he could see fiom the accounts, the priest does not receive as much as the ordinary wages of a labourer. He, Mr .Sheehan, was prepaied to help as followed : He would give £15 for the church debt, £10 for the general fund, and £5 for the repairs, &c, to the Presbytery, but h}s qwn payment would depend on the action of the iest of the paii&hioners. As to the debt, if he saw that the members of the congregation were ready to help themselves, and to make a decent provision for the resident priest, he would himself take over the debt at 5 per cent, for 12 months. On hearing these remarks of the chairman all present applauded his generosity, and die great interest he showed in the wishes of the pi iest, A list wa.B then opened for the general fund, and upwards of £3S were subscribed on the spot, Mr McVeagh and Mr Dogherty, who have always been among the first to help in the affairs of tho church, each giving £5. A general vote of thanks to the chairman closed the meeting. After tins \\\e Reverend Father Npboa, on his own part, expressed his lively feelings of gratitude towards Mr Sheehan, and explained to him his ardent wish to establish a Catholic School in Cambridge as soon as the debt on the church should be paid. The congregation sympathise entirely with this wish of the Reverend Father Noboa, and. wquld profit by this occasion to speak of the complete disinterested, ness which he has shown durincMyj^esidence with them, a fact th^flH^Bred by his not being willing J^^^^^^^w*? sonally any money on a^H^^^^^B^^ is evidently his one desiretna^Hpbt should be paid, the church well carecFxor, and the Catholic School established, a wish that all the Catholics of Cam.b,rif}fte, re'gcljQ.
