Sir G. Grey. Auckt,a>td, Last Night. Ix all probability Sir G. Grey will proceed to Waikato by to-morrow morning's train for a private meeting with Wahanui and other influential King natives. Wahanui is desirous of consulting him regarding the land question, and it is more than probable that the matter of the trunk railway will be fully discussed. Should circumstances prove favourable, Sir George will leave here by the Hinemoa for Wellington on Tuesday. He has, during the recess, prepared several " surprise " bills, which will be brought to light early in the session.

The Markets. Auckland Market to-day : Butter continues rather scarce ; eggs are plentiful, with values unaltered ; bacon has fallen about £d per lb ; oats, 2s 5d to 2s 9d ; potatoes, £4 5s to £4 10s, both being plentiful. ,

Mackie, coaoh-jbuilder, is the principal creditor, the other trade debts not exceeding £23. The Rotorua Drowning Case. M r Firth, tlic young gentleman who was drowned at Rotorua, was the third son of the late Mark Firth, the great Sheffield philanthropist, whose bequests amount in the aggregate to £230,000.

Unclean Meat A disgusting case was heard before the Magistrate to-day. Mr Woolfield, meat inspector, applied that certain meat unfit for human food, seized yesterday in the shop of Ptiscoe, butcher, (yiey-street, by the inspector, be condemned. The evidence showed that Pascoe bought a bullock at£2 12s 6d,and|on the day ho bought it other bullocks sold for £5, £6, and £7. He estimated the weight of the bullock at 6 cwt. Ho slaughtered the bullock at the sale yard because it could not walk away. He had been cautioned by Mr Woolfield previously against selling dark meat. The court ordered that the meat be confiscated, and proceedings be taken against defendant for having been in possession of meat which had been condemned as unfit for human food.

A Strange Rumour, j The Thames Star to-night says the rumour that Sir G. Grey will join the Ministry this session arises out of the report that lie 13 favourable to the proposed private bill, granting powers to a strong combination of big capitalists working to amalgamate several native land companies. It says Mr Bryce and other Ministers are opposed, and the combination will be formed to get rid of them by the bill. The Star discredits tho rumour as far aa Grey is concerned.
