The Manawatu Railway Company, today, received a cablegram from Sir Julius Vogel, announcing th \t their debentures, amounting to £200,000, have been taken up by a London syndicate. The debentures bear.five per cent, interest, but the directors lefuse so state at what price they have been disposed of, beyond the general statement that it is a satisfactory one. By the Act, they cannot sell at a price which will give the purchasers more than six per cent. The reserve of 40,000 shares have also been taken up in London, on the same terms as the shares held in the colony. The directors now intend to push on the construction -of the line with the greatest possible rapidity. Last Night. Major Atkinson returned to Wellington from Nelson this morning. The Government telegraphed to the Agent General the drowning of Mr Firth, the English tout'isfc, at Ohinemutu, ami a reply has beou received asking for the details of the sad occurrence. The charge brought against Jacob Monteith, chemist, for shipping goods alleged to be dangerous, was to-day dismissed. The informations laid at Carterton against Joseph and Eli Strawbridjje, for receiving stolen goods, completely broke down, and the accused were discharged. In one or two other cases informatics wore withdrawn.
