THE FUTURE OF WAIKATO.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — A few remarks regarding the Waikato district and its possible future, from one who has seen in the last 29 years of colonial experience in Victoria, Tasmania and the South Island, many districts with less natural advantages rise to become large factors for export, will, I trust, not be out of place. The land over the whole is fairly good, and can be made excellent by fair cultivation, at the same timo there is a very considerable amount of very rich land. The whole is capable of producing large quantities of cereals, roots and other products, not at present even thought of or tested, and the ultimate fattening and wool growing capabilities will be enormous. The advantages for settlement the district has over others I have known may briefly be summed up, and are chiefly these : Good land can be obtained at a reasonable price (which will surely increase) ; the climate is second to none ; the soil is easily worked ; there, is a large area to select from ; the roads are almost level, compaied to other distiicts of even less extent ; rivers and streams, that in the future will play a most important part, that of conveying produce cheaply to market. The importance to the district of its rivers can hardly be over-esti-mated, and when population is drawn to to the Waikato, as it will by the new lines of railway now about to be constrncted, it will be surprising the quantity of products the district will have to export, this, with the riveia and iailways, will be easily accomplished, wheie in most places the settler is dependent only on r.iilw ay carriage. No district have I seen with such on area that can so easily and cheaply get its surplus produce to its market (or its export centre). Having also mineral wealth in and around it, meaning a consuming population, it will be greatly assisted. And, lastly, the situation in the centre of tlie widest part of New Zealand is most advantageous, inasmuch as from this centre will in the futuic (not long distant, colonial giowth is lapid) radiate lines of railway to cither coast in various directions, to each of the nveisthe construction being inexpensive. 'lhc.se aie c ome of my reasons for considering that the Waikato has a great future before it, and also my excuse for wiiting upon the subject. — I am, &c, John Gii-forij.
