ALEXANDRA.

Govkrnor Jervois visit liere last week was a great disappointment to the natives in the vicinity as well as to many of the inhabitants, his early and unexpectedly short stay preventingany but those in the route of his drive through the township being aware of his Excellency's arrival. Tawhiao, with, his people at Whatiwbatihoe, were on the road down here to meet the vice-regal party, but being informed by someone that the Governor intended to visit the settlement, returned there to welcome him in the usual native fashion. As the Governor actually started and drove part of the way there and returned, as I am informed, because he thought he would not be up to time to meet the train at Ohaupo, Tawhiao must have been rightly informed of his Excellency's intending to go to his place. Theie has been no end of native surmises as to his reason for not doing so. The old men say if was a very bad omen to turn back after once starting to visit Tawhiao ; they say that they look upon it for cqrfeain that some ill will come by his doing so, that it is invariably the case that when one great chief starts to see another and turns back, he dies shortly afterwards, but as the Governor is not a Maori they cannot say what will eventuate, but certainly no good will come by his not carrying out his first intention. Business is quiet in the township just now, but improvements are going on, as since the erection of Tawhiao's bridge, there has been but little traffic across the old bridge, and the business people at the lower end of the township have experienced., q, great falling off in their takings, the hotel known as the JJxphapge especially. Mr Asmuss, the owner, therefore, determined to build a new one, on a site purchased by him opposite the Alexandra Hotel, and for which he paid £200 for the half-acre. Mr Mandeno, of Te AwaMnutu, prepared the plans, and Mr Henry Baker, who has taken the contract for the building, ia making good progress in its erection. The new house will have fifteen rooms and the bar, with a spacious balcony. All the rooms will be of goqd height, sq necenjary for comfort in a public • house, and well ventilated. The exterior has a handsome appearance, being well finished. Mr Patrick Connell, the present popular licensee of the old Exchange, will apply for a transfer of the license to the new building, having taken a lease of the premises, Mr Asmuss also intends to build a new store adjacent very shortly. Mr Oliver, the storekeeper, has also removed his store, and made additions, which are nearly completed, close to the new hotel. Mr "Pinch, of the old an 4 fayqurite Alexandra Hotel, is also going in for improving his accommodation to his numerous friends and the travelling public— (Own Correspondent, May 15th.)

Mr H, G-. Graeme announces that he has commenced to practice as a lioensed surveyor in Hamilton. Address Gwynne's Hotel. The annual meeting of the Tuhilcarameaßoad District will be held in the school-house on Thursday, June 7th, at 3p.ro. Mr John I£nox will sell at the Hamilton Auction Mars on Saturday next ? furniture, produce, &c. Also, a harness and saddle mare. He was buying a tumbler of toughened glass in a chinashop. Poising it in his hand, ho asked, " Is this really unbreakable ?" " Yes, " replied the shopwomau. " May I try it ?" said he. " I'd rather you paid for it first," was the rejoinder ; and when he .had paid she added, " You had better not let the servant know it's unbreakable, qr they will be sure to break it,"
