POLICE PAY. TO THE EDITOR.

Sir,— Will you kindly allow me space in your valuable paper for a few words re long service pay to the police force, which I have read an' account of in an Auckland paper. ■■ On making enquiries, I find that the force has been informed by a circular that long service pay is only given for consecutive service. Now, sir, I know a constable that joined the Queen's Army when sixteen years of age, served ten and a half years, got his dis charge, and joined the police force twenty-four years ago. He served over six years, four of them being in charge of a station. Ho resigned to be a bailiff in the Supreme Court. Work falling off there in 1870, and no men required in the police force, early in 1871 he accepted the situation and pay of a special constable in the country, was at the beck and call of everyone that requited him. In 1877 he was again taken into the constabulary, and a station given to him. He has a laige family to support, all born and bi ought up while he was serving the Government. Still the Defence Minister remunerates that constable with sixpence (Gd) per diem long service pay. The case is only one instance of many old men entitled to a pension put off with sixpence (6d) per diem, where young men with five years service get the same.— l am, &c., A Reader.
