TUESDAY, APRIL ;2j, 18S3.

The material progress of the Auckland province is becoming more and more manifest. We are daily being afforded substantial and unmistakable evidences of this pleasing fact. Our waste lands are gradually finding their way into the market, where they meet with ready sale. Our extensive tracts of swamp land, scattered here and there over the country, are being reclaimed at enormous outlay by private speculation, and the beautiful tracts of arable land, which have hitherto known no other than native ownership, are almost imperceptibly passing into the hands of the enterprising pakeha, for the purposes of immediate settlement. The.se are practical facts, which in r?omfc of progress speak for themselves. Bucces,s, from the guarantee which it affoi'dtf, never fails to beget renewed enterprise, as progress begets progress, and as a proof of this conclusion we may instance the success which so far has attended the settlement of the Patctcre country, and the renewed enterprise which such success has given rise to. It is quite evident that the enterprise which gave birth to the Thames V alley and llotorua railway was stimulated by tUa success of former enterprises experienced in the settlement of the couuli-y through which the line is to pass, and now we aeo glad to notice the promoters of tho railway project have been fortunate, so tay ftS the construction of the line is concerned, in overcoming all preliminary obstacles. Tn our issue of hut Thursday wo recorded the fact that the result o{ the polling was almost unanimous in favour of the line — that the property holders through whose land the; line had io piVKS had consented to allow themselves io hp rated, in order that tlmy might have not only the value of their lands materially enhanced, but thai they ini^ht have cheap access to a good and daily increasing market, and a means to develop the resources of the country generally. We must say that the foresight manifested by the property holders in embracing this opportunity for bettering their condition is both commendable and [ worthy <qI congratulation, and we sincerely hops, they will be suitably rewarded by thfi ttPSlllt of the step which they have taken.
