PROPOSED CHEESE FACTORY AT KIHIKIHI.
Purspant' to advertisement a public meeting to consider the course to be taken, and the measures to be adopted for the establishment of a cheese and bacon factory in the district, was held in the Alpha Hotel on Saturday evening last. Mr W. A. Cowan, was elected to the clidir, who, on reading the notice convening the meeting, invited the gentlemen present who were conversant with the details of forming and working such an undertaking to give all possible information, whereupon Mr Hutchinson, who lias been associated with the Te Awamutu Factory since its commencement, and who has had large and varied' experience in dairying in the Old Country, kindly gave some excellent advice, and at the same time went closely into statistics 1 , showing the immense advantage such industries are to farmers for the disposal of their milk, and the pleasing fact of their receiving regularly their cheque monthly as a consideration not to be liahtly overlooked in a new country like tins. In reply to a question as to how his cows paid, Mr Hutchinson stated that he commenced to supply to Te Awamutu so Lite as October, and yet, up to the present time, they left him a clear profit of €b' per head for their milk. He was quite certain that if he had had the full season for it he could obtain a return of t{) per cow. Air Andrew Rosa, than whom no man in the province has had more expciicnce, both m this country and America, spoke in favour of the factory system, and its advantage ivnd profits compared with that of the house-producing method of old. He was most desirous to see such an excellent industry started in this place. He was convinced from long experience in Kihikilu that it would pay. Me Cackeslinc hoped that they would profit by the mistakes of the Te Awannitu people, that they should take care not to swamp themselves at first by purj chasing more land than they actually required. Mr Ashby endorsed the views of the last speaker. He thought four or five acres quite sufficient, provided the land had length, so as to keep the pigs well away from the factory, and an abundant supply of pure water. Mr Hutchins>on, m reply to a question put by Mr Farrell, stated that a company with a capital of £2000 could start fairly well, one half of which to be called up the fit sfc year for the erection of the lequired buildings, purchase of plant, &c. The meeting was forthwith tested, and names taken down, when the result showed that £700 was subscribed, The names of absentee residents, who wetc well known to be ftivoutahlc to the movement, wcic als>o noted, which bi ought the figures well on towards thp £1000. After some general discussion, in which nearly everyone in the room had something to say, it was resolved to adjourn the meeting until that night week, when they would form a company. Meanwhile, the district is to be canvassed, and holders of propei ty in Kihikihi, whether in Anckor elsewhere, written to for support. Mr Grresham, ot Te Awamutu, was present, and rendered good service by his advice and encoiuagenient. A vote of thanka to the chair closed the meeting. — (Correspondent.)
