DUNEDIN, Tuesday.
Information has been received from Teviot, in Tuapeka County, that the body of a Chinaman has been found in a gully, the cause ot death being a gunshot wouud. It is belived munler has been committed. The Hobavt Mercury having quoted the Government auctioneer's report concerning the Tasmanian purchasers at the recent Otago land sale, Philip and William Young, of Clarence, wiote to the Mncunj of April 11 as follows:— "We are alleged to be dummies upon the ground, that the cheques given for the purchase money were those of the New Zealand Agency Company, and not money held by us. Had we thought any objection would have been raised to our employing the agency company to pay for us, we would have taken the money in our hands and paid for it at the sale. The Otago Waste Lands Board advertised the sale of land to take place on the 28th February. We left hero and arrived at Dunedin ten days before the sale, and received such information of the land we bought from friends who knew it thoroughly as made it unnecessary for us to inspect it as carefully as we otherwise would have done. We attended the sale, bought of land, paid the deposit, made the necessary declaration of being bona fide purchasers, and did all that the Waste Lands Act required of us, and therefore we indignantly deny the statement that we are dummies, and we think we have reasou to complain of the way we have been treated by the Otago Waste Lands Board and the Otago newspapers," Last Night. The following further particulars are to hand of the murder of Ah Chin, a Chinaman, near Teviot :— Deceased and the informant, "Wan Kie, were in a cave on the bank of the Clutha river, smoking opium, about 7 p.m. on the 16th hist. Wan Kie fell asleep, and was aroused by the report of a gun, when the deceased called out "I am shot. lam dying." Footsteps were heard outside the cave, but the informant was nfraid to go out for some time, On going out he saw no one, On the poUog visiting the scene they found deceased dead with a small shot wouud on his right breast and head. &he cave was not disturbed, and money and a watch were found on the deceased person. No motive can be assigned for the murder. An inquest will be held on Saturday. OHSIST€3URCH, Last Night. A-nOth§l-' 4«W»QDd pro§pecting party' left for J£a]vern fco-d.ay t
