London, April 16 (evening).' • Ik the House of Commons to-day a question was put to tlie Under-Secretary of the Colonies regarding the reported annexation of New Guinea. In reply, the Hon. 'Evelyn Ashly confirmed the announcement, and informed the House that the island had been taken by the Queensland Government in the name of Her Majesty the Queen, pending the decision by the Imperial Government on the subject. The Hon. Mr. Ashley added that the annexation was ' deemed expedient in order to prevent the acquisition of New Guinea by Foreign Powers. April 17. The London newspapeis in their leading articles this morning, commenting upon the annexation of New Guinea by Queensland, 'generally eppress doubt that the Imperial Government will approve the action of the colonial authorities.
