Mahuki Sentenced. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
Auckland, Last Night, In the Supreme Court to-day, Mahuki and followcis were charged with assaulting and wounding Te Haere. Evidence was given thatTe Haere was pulled oft' his horse, wounded, and thrown into a whare. His Honour put the case to the iury, and considered there could bo no doubt but the man was wounded by a hand, but whose hand it was the evidence had fajled to show. Still it was evident they had acted very rougly towards To Haere, and had made him a prisoner in the cook-house. Prisoners had offered no defence in explanation of their conduct. If the jury, however, believed they were acting together for one common purpose they were equally guilty in the eye of the law. The jury retired, and after an absence of ten minutes returned iuto court with a verdict of unlawfully wounding and doing bodily harm to Te Haere. The prisoners were then arraigned on a charge of assaulting Aubin Airier, at Alexandra. Evidence was given of the nature of th^psault, and the rescue by the Volun>Bu(lge Gillies, in summing up, said Ifl)ere was no evidence of bodily harm. wine slight pain had been inflicted to MrAhier by the tying up, but every interference with a man's liberty was an assault. The jury found a verdict of guilty of common assault. ( t The prisoners were then removed. ' , Later. Mahuki and Hamilton were sentenced* to 12 months',' 3 others to 9 months', and theTemainder to 6 months'.
