A DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL FOR HAMILTON.

, -y A joint meeting of the Hamilton East and West School Committees was held at the Public Hall on Tuesday evening, to consider proposals made by the Hoard of Education in reference to the establishment of a high school. There were present— Messrs Hume (chairman H. \V. committee), Yon. Stunner (chairman H. E. committee), Knox, Cochrane, Steadman, Hughes, Bradley, McLernon and Dey. Mr Home having been voted to the chair, explained the object for which the present meeting had been convened, and read the following letter :—: — Board of Education, Auckland, 24|bh March, 1853. ' Sir. — "I am directed, to inform yon that the board has carefully consideied the pioposals for the establishment of a district h.igh school at Hamilton, and that the proposals are generally approved of t on. the, express condition , that f tj^e school shall be carried on so long only l as it shall be self-supporting. Copies of the reports made by the inspector of schools on the subject are enclosed for the information ot the committee. It is propooed that the fee should be at the rate of eight guineas (£8 Ss) a-yeari and that pupils should be eligible tor the higher instruction when they have passed the fourth standard. As regards building, the inspector 1 epovts that a portion of, the school at Hamilton E.ist 'n available as a class-room. Attention is called to the provisions of the Act, section 55 and 56, which indicate w hat further requirements have to be complied with in this matter. It seems necessary that the Hamilton East committee should join ,in the application. — I have the honour to be, sir, your obedient servant, Vixckxt E. Rick, Secretary. The Chairman of the District School Committee, Hamilton West." After some discussion, the following resolution, moved by Mr Yon Stunner, and seconded by Mr Cochrane, was carried unanimously, and ordered to be forwarded to the board :—: — , " That the committees of ,tbe East and West Hamilton schools having considered the proposals of the Board of Education with reference to the establishment "of a higli school, to be attachedto theHamil. ton school, accept the same, subject to certain minor arrangements, the details of which may be discussed between a subcommittee and the inspector, during his proposed visit to Hamilton." iOrvtbe motion of Mr, Dey, seconded by Mr McLernon, the chairmen of the respective committees (Messrs Hume and Yon Stunner), Messrs Cochrane and Bradley were appointed a sub-committee, to confer with the inspector, Mr, O'Sullivan, on his expected visit, as to' all matters connected with the establishment of the High School. . , ,■ ' At a meeting of the sub-corn in ittee, hold subsequently, Mr Hume was* appointed chairman and executive officer, to'correspond with the Board of Education;
