The Government have received confirmation that the day of the old monthly meetings passed oft with perfect quietness at Parihaka. No attempt was made to hold a meeting, and if is now definitely known that To Whiti did send lound specially to different parts of the country expressly forbidding natives to assemble. * ,
Last Night. Major Atkinson speaks at (Jhnsfcchuroh this evening. Mr Montgomery has notified his intention of leplying tomorrow. With regard to the -renewal of the 'Frisco mail contract it i 3 understood that Mr Sluart, Premier of New Sonth Wales, will shoi tly inform the Parliament there of the views of hi** Government on the subject, and the New Zealand Government await the result. ' The Victorian Government recently invited New Zealand to join }n a. conference to consider the advisability of joining the postal union. The New Zealand Government have replied, regretting their inability to take part in the conference, as it is impossible that a Minister could ,be spared to , visit Australia so shortly before the meeting of Parliament. The Wellington-Manawatu Railway Company have called tenders for another section of the Wellington-Foxton railway of 3 miles 55 chains in extent. , His Excellency the Governor will leave Wellington for Auckland on Tuesday, 3rd prox. The Premier will start from Wellington on Thursday next for Napier vue Masteiton. From Napier he will proceed on Satuul.iy by the Taraweia en route for Auckland. It is understood tint Mete Kingi PaeUkac, a, loyal Wanganui chief, called to-day upon His Excellency the Governor to welcome him to New Zealand, and to request that His Excellency would attend a, large gathering of the natives at Wanganui dining the first week in April, wbcicnt, among other topics, the Tre.ity of Waitangi will bo discussed. A laige number of Ngapuhi, it uas stated, have accepted an invitation to be piesent, and natives fiom the various New Zealand tribes are expected. It is believed that in the event of the meeting taking place His Excellency will give his answer whether he will attend or not. A meeting of auctioneers was held this afternoon to discuss the best means of j elieving them by the Licensing Act of 1881. His Worship the Mayor and Mr llutchinson, M.H.R., were also present. Ultimately it wns decided that a deputation of those interested should wait on the Colonial Secretary, with a view of bringing the question prominently before the Government. H.M.S. Espeigle sailed for Sydney this afternoon. She will be followed by the Diamond in thiee or four days. The steamer Bi itish King, from London, has just been signalled.
