TE AROHA. St. Patrick's Day.

BusiXKSS was almost entirely suspended in the township, no local sports were instituted, but every one who could get nw.iy and by any means raise a steed, was seen hastening Paeroa to attend the race meeting there. The weather was excellent, and a good day's sport was enjoyed.

Accident. A aerious accident happened Oil Friday evening. A hn<>i>y drive)) by Air J. S. Bueklamd came to gucf on the ro.id to Paci^-ancl tho occupants of the buggy WGtfi^iiorc or less injiucd. I have nob heard full particulars, but believe a young man named Cl.irkc, who was in the buggy when the accident occurred, had several ribs broken.

The Recent Failure. The failure of the firm of T. W. Carr and Sons has tin own quite a gloom over business people here, and will be the means of causing a serious depression at Te Aroha for some time to come. The store here is closed, and a po&so of bailiffs are waiting for daylight on Monday to make a seizin c.

Mining News. Pkkmikk.— Sinking the winze still continues, and good payable stone is being met with, and the drive in thi reef at the low level is being pushed ahead towaids the shot of gold. Colonist. — Work on the surface still continues, and it is expected that the tianiway to connect the mine with the hopper at the hoise giadc tiam will soon be completed. Nkw Find. — The contractors are lusy sinking the shaft and <1 living the low level crosscut to intersect the main reef. Diamond Gully. — Woik in this mine is not vigoiously prosecuted, and it is rumoured that the men at picsent employed ai c to be knocked oil until calls can' be collected to pay wages. Eitkeka.— The low lesel which was driven on the reef was continued on a branch of the main icef miming more to the westward than the lode on which the winze was sunk. This mistake wns not found out until the surveyor had been notified of the direction the dnve was going. Subsequently, by his advice, a crosscut wns put in to inteisect the main reef. As the country was haul at the jtlnce where the junction occuired, it was thought better to crosscut for the reef than to come back to the junction and drive along it. This ctosscut i& being diiven in kindly countiy, and there is every indication ot the reef being close at hand. Wikuhko. — Thi' interim* liate level will be connected with the upper level in about another fortnight. The wm/o u-. now blink "2(i teet, and the countiy i-> of <i fair dcsciiption, &o that goo 1 headway can be made. The .shaft which i& being sunk m connection with tho Waitoki is in fair countiy, and good piogu.-<s is made with t'le woiL Die manager h of opinion that an iioti slioot will be sivllicient to connect the low level with the hopper at the hoise grade tram wayIn theLiHKY Hit, stone showing gold is being met with in sinking the winze. iNVKKUEhS. — The reef that was lately opened in thib ground has bpen found at sonic dibtance low er down the hill than where gold was first discovered in it, and the same class ot gold-bearing stone met with. The thickness of the reef is about two feet. There is nothing fresh to report from the other claims at woik on the hill, but near the flat, a short distance to the westwudof where the Buck Heef crops out at Waiorongomai township, a paity of miners have discovned gold-bearing (|imrtz, which, it is to bo hopud, will lead to a payable reef being found. The tiaimvay formation woiks aie progressing satisfactory, and the permanent way contract is to be let on the 2nd April. The Company who own the battciy erected here in the early days, have placed the w hole of the plant in the hands of Gellioii and Co., at the Thames, to be sold by auction. I hear that several pai ties heie arc desnous of having it put in working order again, in oider to crush a quantity of quartz fiom a reef leccntly opened in tho old United claim near the slaughteryard. It would certainly be a pity if the battery was sold to be removed, as there aic numerous leefs still untried on the western side of the mountain. — [Own Correspondent, Maicli 17.]
