TE AWAMUTU CHEESE AND BACON FACTORY. Extraordinary Meeting of the Directors.
Ay extraordinary meeting of the directors of the above factory was held at the office of the company on Friday evening lasb. There Mas a full attendance of directors. The meeting was called in consequence of a report published in these columns on the 13th inst., the substance of which is 1 doubtless, fresh in the, memoiyofour readers. The gentlemen? whose conduct was called into question in the report refened to, together with others of the directors invited Captain Runciman as an expert to visit the factory, and report upon the general management. In accordance with this invitation Capt. Runcimdu visited the factocy in company with six of the directors and a n timber of shareholders on Friday last. At the meeting in the evening Captain ,RunCiman,'s report 'was read. The ' Report was of a most unfavourable nature as regards the working of the ' factory 1 , aud was particularly condemnatory of the management! This was concurred in by the whole of the directors. With reference to the statement in our isSne of the 13th imt. th.it " it had been rrpeatedly urged by the manager to find a inai ket for the cheese, as with the limited staff it was utterly impossible that the stoic-room < ould receive the proper amount of attention, lint to which no heed had been paid," \tr Churches asked the chairman if any demand had been made for extra help. — The Chairmau (Mr Hridgman) lcplied that thefitst intimation they had received from the muuger that he required extia help wag on Monday, the 12th, the evening previous to the publication of tho foiegoinj* statement. With refeience tothe alleged inteiference of the directors, the chairman stated in reply to a question from Mr Burke that nothing of the sort had ever been reported to him by the manager. With reference to the statement Alleging that damage had arisen from cheese being sent by the train loose against the express advice of the manager, the secretary stated in reply th.it no complaints had been made by the consignee, and the chairman' added that the cheese Had' been sent loose at the request of the consignee,) who stated he always preferred having it sent in this way. With reference to the statement that the manager ,be called upon to pay an item of 17s Gd on account of printing some legulation forms, this was decided upon by the directory as it was unauthorised and considered unnecessary. Considering this condition of affairs, it was decided that an immediate change of manager was absolutely necessary, and the meeting at this stage was adjourned till last night to meet a gentleman who had been invited to at; tend the meeting with a view to his engagement to carry on the work of the factory. Before separating the directors passed a cordial vote, of thanks to Capt. Runciman for his attendance.
