The races were held on the Ruakaka course, and by one o'clock, when the first race was called, about 000 people had congregated, of whom fully half were mounted on horseback. Three booths had been erected, and a plentiful supply of necessaries ftiriiished to refresh the inner man. A Maori, who hail brought a waggon-load of water melons from Paeroa, disposed of them in a manner voithy of a London costermonger. Mr Frasers Woodpecker, Gyrs., Sst. 81lu 1 Mr Jeffrey's Luck penny, aged, Bst. 21bs. 2 Mr Laidiaw's Rewi, oyi's., Sst Slbs. ... 3 Mr Shea's Whispering Jack, 4yrs., 6st. Tibs., 0 Woodpecker and llcwi made a good start, with Luekpcnny thice lengths behind. The running was even between the leading horses till within half-a-mile of the post, when LueUpenny passed Rcwi and got second place, Woodpecker keeping the lead and winning in a canter ; Rewi a bad third. A good start was effected, Camen winning, hard held, by a dozen lengths from second and third horses, who were close together. Incense, Kui, Jacob and Fredenca aUo btarted. Lady Bab did not show up. The inside totalisator paid a dividend ofL2 l.ls. Handicap Hukdlk Back, 130 soys.; 1\ miles. Canard 1 Loch Lomond 2 WildDayrell 3 Heretaunga also ran, but had no show from the start. Wild Day i ell gave the winner a hard race.
