LATEST AUCKLAND NEWS. [BY TELEGRAPH. — OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

Bishop Luck and the " Star." Auckland, Last Night. Tiik following letter from Bishop Luck appears in to-night's Star: — Dear Sir. " In a paragraph of your issue of last Saturday, headed " Bishop Luck's Attitude," I regret to say that you have made me po^D before the Catholic public in both a false and painful position. Whatever my own views are about the mission of the Messrs Redmond, and those can be learnt from the letter" addressed by me to the president and members of the Hibernian Catholic Benefit Society, they are not such W I seek to impose on any of my Irish diocesaries. I regret extremely that your statements about a pastoral letter addressed by me to clergy and about difference of views between myself and them, and about their intention to disregard my supposition pastoral utterances — I regret to say that' such statements should have appeared in your columns, especially at a moment when misapprehensions may give rise to misunderstandings. These statements are untrue. You have made me pose in the attitude of English v. Irish, an attitude which I deprecate, an attitude which is most offensive, both to uiyselfi and the many Catholic Irish who read w jhe Star, and an attitude, in fine, mint alien to my wishes and to the sjgftpathies of my heart. I hope '^fl^ fore you will do me the kil^^ to iDsert these few lines, and so remove, a3 faraa may be, the misapprehension to which your paragraph has given rise. John Edmund 'Luck, 0.5.8., Bishop of Auckland." In the foot-übte to ' this letter, the Editor of the Star says : 45 We regret that the Bishop's letter to the Hibernian Catholic Benefit Society, from Which >he Bishop desires us,to'lfcqr,n his views, has not been placed Vt our disposal for publication, arid the journal tin which we understood it was, to appear has apparently suppressed' it. We understand, however, that r the communication, was one of considerable length, In which the Bishop set forth very lucidly and forcibly hia reason why the society should take no, part in the reception* of Mf Redmond. The meeting at which it was read, while thanking the 'Bishop for his advice, referred him to ono of the standing riiles of > the society? that precluded the discussion of politioaTquestionsattheir meetings.)' As to whether' the clergy intend to *actin. /opposition 1 to bishop's avowed opinions on the subject -the event will show. *> "A l! " '"^ \j i ' • '[• " y •" < ' > 'The' M£rkettr ' !
