THE CAMBRIDGE WATER SUPPLY.
It would seem as if Mr Emngton's report on the abovo matter has not, bepnjot a sufheicntly discouraging nature to cle-fj ter some ol the Cainbudge public, particularly the members of the" Town .Board, from entettaiumg turthcr hopes ot being dbie to secure a suitable supply of water for the town at a cost leasouably within the means ot the ratepayers. Mr Emngtons leport, which was laid before the meeting ot the Cambridge Town Boaul on Monday eycuiug Lisl, and which Me published "iU 'our 'impression oi Tuesday; liAs hp&u perused with great intunWLiy* tJid 1 'Cambridge publwj and, thougli the s>Uieme m , with Stoney Creek, which 1 is estimated to cost about. £1.1,000 ( (iucluding cost of mams tinou'gh the town) is leeonimende'd, some 1 aie ol opinion that the town is m a position to entertain' the scheme in connection with the Mangakawa stream, estimated to oosit £70 10. Speaking of tins scheme, ivli Ellington sa^s ;—"; — " Maugakawa sticams, by being connected near then source, and an impounding reseivoir, umstiuetod distant o\ miles, and at an elowition ot 2DO feet, the btreains (oollectn ely) guaged ) lolded 13,1, "200 gallons per daj', or 4.3 gallons per head for a population of iiUOO ; or, 2/ gallons a day tor a population of S'JUO. With' a, 7 inch main, the &aine lesults would be obtained tis that given in the pioposed scheme preceding tins, lesb 10 per cent. The cost of this undei taking would be £7015." The scheme letcried to as preceding this io that lii connection withfcjtoney Ureek. Heganlmg this scliotuo, thu repoitsays : — '•Alter giving an ' ample supply for domcotic and other purposes, besides being thoroughly elective tor hre extinguishing purposes, a very consideiable levenu'i could be obtained for watei as a' inotivc powei." The board caiefully considered the niattei at their meeting on Monday' evening, and were favourably impressed with the Mangakawa scheme*. The fact that the railway would shoi tly be completed and that ,i good supply of water would bu manned tor the use of | the engine^, iiuhcated that a htLle revenue I could be obtained fiom this soiuce. , Again, the icpoit says that the water oould be utilised us a motive power, and consequently it was thought that by ats utilisation m thit> way by pin ate mdi- \ iduals ow ning local industries, a considerable ainoitnt ot revenue could be obtained. Then again, the woikuig expenses would be veiy limited, as the supply is one of gravitation. Taking ,all encumstmces into consideration, the boatd have determined on calling another public meeting, \\ hen tlu-y will lecomineud the Mangakawa scheme to the ratepayer. In the meantime the chairman, ilr \\ 7 e)ls, has been requested to wute to, Mr Eirington, .asking him for i'uither iiilounation on portions- of the report. VV« aro glad to notice that this important! matter which has been before the Uuubudge public for the pist two years, and m many different lightd and iorm-5, h.is not been allowed to drop. Doubtless as there is now something definite to go upon,. and something which fiom its commendable features is likely to meet with fa\our at the hands of the ratepayers, a second poll on the matter oi a water supply for the town would be attended with much more satisfactory results than the fiist.
