RAGLAN. The Late Flood.
Not Wtlieaiiembry.of ,the oldest', inhabi-J tant in this district has such a flood been seen as occured on the night of the 24th February. ' Ly the RuApuke i and A'otefl districts the rain continued without ceas- , ing throughout Satiu'dayi' and oa Sunday morning the settlers awoke to the fact that considerable damage was done. At Mr Kendall's flak mill' at' 'Ruapuke the large dam which I mentioned as having been conip'leied, \ Wvafe entirely 11 ' 1 washed \\ away. \For a mile, or "two .the beach, is covered with ' various ' kinds of timber, some evidently having been carried a considerable distance by the force of the water. At Maarl, on the Aotea harbour, the extensive dam connected with the native flour null is also destroyed. This dam cost the natives £70 to erect, two. years ago, and necessarily will be a great loss to them. Near Mr IMdellJs Tilace the land has slipped;, amUcpyered n^ly' three acres, whilV seve"ral_.'l'ar^e' lanfl^ slips are r visible^x>% ,tlie mountiin aide. Mr Cussert abd ! p^vty of .surveyors came, a fo'ttmgHt'befbreTa ereqU aif trig; 7 ppca c KarioC but not being able to get a " sight," owing to the misty atmosphere, they had to r remain' till' Monday — after the flood. On their way from Ruapuke to Te Mata, they found three good bridges had been washed away, and part of the road in the bush had slipped some distance down the hill. . The damage to this 'road is 'estimated at ii2oo. At Karioi, acres of potatoes ( and orchard, the property of Mr Savage was destroyed, and ajso a; quantity of, .fencing. Owing to the daifkge on the ' Raglan and WaipV Road the m.ul-coach d\d not come in to Raglan on Tuesday. The natives have, copmencpd work on the Raglan and Kawhia road, and, owing to the scarcity of\ provisions with /them, they' 4re delighted .at,. the ,p;r ; ospecfr;_of earning money to buy food. Their flourmijl is useless through damage done , to it. —(Own Correspondent, March 2nd.)
